Gulf of Mexico Program

Purpose of this program:

(1) To assist States, Indian Tribes, interstate agencies, and other public or nonprofit organizations in developing, implementing, and demonstrating innovative approaches relating to the causes, effects, extent, prevention, reduction, and elimination of water pollution; (2) To expand and strengthen cooperative efforts to restore and protect the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico in ways consistent with the economic well being of the region and to achieve the goals and priorities recommended by the Gulf of Mexico Program Policy Review Board (a Federal Advisory Committee) and the funding priorities of the Gulf of Mexico Program Office (GMPO). Funding Priority: The Gulf of Mexico Program partners with other Federal agencies, States, local governments, and non-profit groups to support attainment of environmental and health goals. Activities fall into three categories: 1. Implementation of core clean water programs, in support of both the environmental goal for the Gulf of Mexico and in support of actions in the Mississippi Basin that help reduce Gulf hypoxia. 2. Activities that support meeting water quality and habitat restoration goals for the Gulf. 3. Activities specifically focused on the Mississippi Basin that are designed to reduce the size of the Hypoxic Zone in the Gulf.
